Norman Gillson, current Warden of Allen Hall, explains why the difficult decision was made to close Allen Hall to students for the current academic year….
“Unfortunately I have some sad news to pass along to those of you that haven’t already heard.
Allen Hall has not opened its doors to a new intake of students this year.
An unfortunate accident involving a new boiler and a couple of the old pipes meant that More and Teilhard were put out of action just five days before the start of year.
With no hope of being able to repair the problem in time, the decision was reluctantly taken to offer the residents a room in their second choice of Hall.
The two tutors that were staying this year and my deputy warden were all found places in the other Halls where I am the warden (Ashburne Hall and Sheavyn House). For those of you who know him, the General Manager for Pastoral Care, Brendon Jones, who also lives in Allen, has been found a place in his old undergrad Hall at Woolton.
Here’s to the next intake that comes through the doors when I am looking forward to carrying on with all of the old traditions as if nothing had happened.
Can I take this opportunity to wish you all a very happy Christmas time.”
